The aperture controls the flow and intensity of the light through the lens. The length of time the shutter stays open controls how long the light hits the sensor or film to create an appropriate exposure.

The glass elements in the camera’s lens only focus on a very narrow area. Closing down the aperture extends or spreads the area that is in sharp focus.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s actually surprisingly easy to understand the various operations of a camera. To start with I’ll paint an uncomplicated picture of what is physically going on in relation to aperture.
